Auditory Verbal
Therapy

Auditory-Verbal Therapy facilitates optimal acquisition of
spoken language through listening by newborns, infants, toddlers, and young
children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Auditory-Verbal therapy promotes
early diagnosis, one-on-one therapy, and state-of-the-art audiologic management
and technology. Parents and caregivers actively participate in therapy while
working with a Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapist. Through
guidance, coaching, and demonstration, parents become the primary facilitators
of their child's spoken language development. Ultimately, parents and
caregivers gain confidence that their child can have access to a full range of
academic, social, and occupational choices throughout life. Auditory-Verbal
therapy must be conducted in adherence to all 10 Principles LSLSTM of
Auditory-Verbal Therapy.
Auditory-Verbal Education
Auditory-Verbal Education
focuses on teaching listening and talking to various sized instructional groups
to prepare children to enter mainstream education when they have the skills to
do so successfully. A Certified Auditory-Verbal Educator (LSLSTM Cert. AVEd)
teaches children with hearing loss to listen and talk exclusively though
listening and spoken language instruction. The LSLSTM Cert. AVEd is guided by the
Academy's Ten Principles of LSLSTM Auditory-Verbal Education and adheres to a
professional code
DePaul currently has three
LSLSTM Cert. AVEd on staff and several other staff members who are working
towards this certification.
Listening
and Spoken Language Specialists
Certified Auditory-Verbal Therapists and Certified Auditory-Verbal Educators are
both considered Listening and Spoken Language Specialists (LSLSTM). LSLSTM professionals help children who are deaf
or hard of hearing to develop spoken language and literacy primarily through
listening.
LSLSTM professionals focus on education, guidance, advocacy, family support and
the rigorous application of techniques, strategies and procedures that promote
optimal acquisition of spoken language through listening by newborns, infants,
toddlers and children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
LSLSTM professionals guide parents in helping their children develop spoken language through listening and coach them in advocating their children’s
inclusion in a mainstream school. Ultimately, parents gain confidence that
their children will have access to the full range of educational, social and
vocational choices in life.
Listening
and Spoken Language Practice
Listening and Spoken Language Specialists have similar knowledge and skills and
work on behalf of the child and family.
The LSLSTM Cert. AVT works one-on-one with the child and family in all
intervention sessions.
