Parent Programs: An Overview

Auditory-Oral Education of a child with hearing loss involves the child, teacher, therapist, audiologist and parents! Since parent involvement is key to our students' success we provide a range of programs to educate and support our parents.

DePaul’s Outreach Coordinator, Lillian R. Lippencott, manages parent education and support programs; school admissions; and community outreach. She is a resource for families interested in DePaul and provides school tours.  Home visits may also be arranged at a family's convenience.

Baby & Parent Group

The Baby & Parent Group provides education and support for parents of infants with hearing loss.  This program is free of charge for all parents of babies with hearing loss.  Bring your baby to the workshop and connect with professionals with expertise working with babies with hearing loss.  We encourage newcomers to attend.  Childcare is available for siblings.

ESP programs offer both education and support for parents of children with hearing loss.  Each month DePaul provides an educational workshop followed by a parent support group meeting.

Education:  Workshops address topics related to the education and care of children with hearing loss.  Our presenters include DePaul’s highly trained professionals including Teachers of the Deaf, Audiologists, Speech Language Pathologists, Administrators and guest lecturers. The dates and topics for upcoming ESP programs for this fall are:

Support: The parent support group offers DePaul parents and other family members the opportunity talk about challenges and concerns. Often times, just knowing that other parents face similar situations, hopes and fears can bring comfort and support. The support group is facilitated by Karen Schrecengost, DePaul’s School Psychologist.

Mentoring

New parents are paired with current DePaul parents to provide consultation and support. Parents of older children with hearing loss are often a great resource for families when they first learn of their child's diagnosis. Families are often matched based upon the child's level of hearing loss and/or geographical location.

DePaul Parent Group

DePaul has an active Parent Group which meets monthly. Parents enjoy camaraderie with other parents and the opportunity to contribute to the school through volunteerism.  The Parent Group organizes social and fundraising events throughout the year for DePaul families and staff including: Santa's Workshop, a Scholastic Book Fair, Night at the Races, and a Staff Appreciation Luncheon. All DePaul parents are welcome and encouraged to become active in the Parent Group.

Support Group

In coordination with the educational psychologist, DePaul provides support group for parents, students and family members.
