Mainstreaming

The DePaul Mission Statement

DePaul recognizes its responsibility to prepare our students to succeed in school district-based education programs. By fostering positive relationships with our families and their school districts, our students have successfully transitioned to regular education classrooms, from kindergarten through ninth grade.
Mainstreaming and transition is a process which requires teamwork and planning. The staffs of DePaul, the school district and the intermediate unit work with each family to develop a plan that will ensure a smooth and seamless transition to the mainstream. The plan includes:
- Self advocacy and social skills classes for our students to provide them with the tools to connect with new friends and professionals;
- Identifying services that the student will need in the mainstream;
- Observations by DePaul staff at classrooms in the school district;
- Observations by school district and intermediate unit staffs at DePaul;
- Professional development provided by DePaul teachers, speech-language pathologists, and educational audiologists for school district-based regular education teachers;
- A gradual mainstreaming process beginning with an opportunity for the student to become more familiar with the new school environment, staff, and students; and
- Participation by DePaul staff in future IEPs.
By maintaining high academic standards and careful planning, our former students have demonstrated the ability to succeed in the mainstream, both educationally and socially.
